40 POINT ARENA
Located on the coast 13. 3 miles north of Mendocino County’s southern boundary,
Point Arena has metropolitan benefits, a rural character, and coastal weather. It’s
surprisingly small, with a surprising amount to do.
The nearby lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse open to climb in California. The
city is home to a working pier at Arena Cove; an endangered animal preserve, and a
downtown historic district with colorful shops, unique places to eat, the restored Arena
Theater, and historic St. Paul’s Church.
Point Arena may remind visitors of a small town back in the day. The business
district starts at the high point at the north end of town, where St. Paul’s Church and
the elementary school sit side by side, and extends to Port Road at the bottom of the
hill. Arena Cove is one mile west on Port Road. Historic buildings line Main Street,
many painted bright colors, home to cafes, organic markets, and a patisserie. The Arena
Theater, built in 1928, features movies, live music and entertainment events.
Arena Cove attracts commercial and sport fishermen, surfers, sunset watchers, and bird watchers. The cove is the site of fireworks over Fourth of July
weekend and other Point Arena events. Local and visiting fishermen fish off the wharf, where a license is not required for sport fishing. A full range of
accommodations is available in the area, including inexpensive rooms, bed and breakfast, ocean front, cabins, campsites and rental houses. The Point Arena area
provides many opportunities for watching wildlife including marine mammals, resident and seasonal birds, and gray whales during annual migrations. Beautiful
ocean vistas, coastal ranches, and colorful sunsets attract artists and photographers.
Enjoy driving back roads with beautiful vistas of farm and dairy country; tour a historic lighthouse; walk the colorful streets of a historic city and ocean cove
on an overnight stay, a romantic visit, or a family vacation!
