Gualala is just such a magical place. Its name, a Pomo Indian phrase meaning “where the
waters flow down,” refers to the peaceful and pristine Gualala River, home to river otters,
osprey, herons, and kingfishers. You can even paddle up the estuary in a rented kayak or canoe,
led either by a guide or by your own spirit.
After a morning of solitude listening to song sparrows on the river, or watching gray whales
from the beach, you might rejoin the human world by visiting one of the numerous galleries in
the village, where many of the creations are inspired by the local natural beauty.
Or you might enjoy a meal at one of Gualala’s superb restaurants, followed by a concert,
theatrical performance, lecture, or class at the Gualala Arts Center. If you’re lucky you’ll have the
pleasure of attending the Art in the Redwoods Festival, or the Redwood Coast Whale and Jazz
Festival.
