History & Flavor
Willits is a rural community with a rich history and unique flavor. There’s something
of the old frontier, and something of the new age, in the character of this bustling
highway town, known as The Gateway to the Redwoods.
Just a couple hours north of San Francisco, Willits is centrally located in the heart of
Mendocino County with a selection of lodging that can make a great home base for
day trips to the towering Redwood forests, award-winning Mendocino wine country, or
legendary Mendocino Coast.
Local attractions include the Mendocino County Museum which has one of the
finest collections of Pomo and Yuki baskets in the world, and the Roots of Motive
Power display which is a working exhibit of steam logging equipment used at in the
early 1900’s. Rigdgewood Ranch, home of the famous race horse, Seabiscuit is another
favorite local attraction, with historical walking tours of the grounds.
Activities available include golf at a unique nine-hole course in the heavily
forested Brooktrails area, and casino style gambling right at the edge of town. The
scenic countryside offers opportunities for hiking and camping, hunting and fishing,
horseback riding and more. Downtown, you can find some unique shops and eateries,
and an active arts community.
